in the system of subsidiary alliance,
1. The British troops were assigned with the troops of Indian rulers by British to guard the ruler from external aggressions and internal disturbances
2. the ruler had to pay the British troops also
3. the Indian ruler also had to keep an English resident in his court so that the British could control Indian territories without war
4. the rulers who joined this system enjoyed a sense of security against the other Indian rulers, but they suffered a loss of independence
5. areas like awadh, Cochin, Jaipur, Travancore, Hyderabad, were conquered through subsidiary alliance
