Answer:

The traditional miniature painting according to the subcontinent is a technique of making fine illustrations on a minimal scale. The paintings are made by using water based coloured and is done in steps. First a wash of water, then a wash of the requires colours. After that the texture of the illustration is slowly built up by fine rendering , also known as ‘perdakht' and applying the paint in fine gradation of the coloures.

Traditionally there are three techniques of doing miniature painting. Siah qalam ( using lamp black water based paint) , neem rang ( using different water based coloured), and gad rang(in this another base paint is added within the required colour , called safaida, it is basically used to make the paint opaque). There are different schools of miniature painting such as mughal painting , rajhidtani paintings and also there sub divided schools, which are being practised through out the subcontinent as a revival or archival of the tradition.
