Answer:

The process due to which an acid completely reacts with a base with the evolution of heat to form salt and water as the products is called Neutralisation

example, when hydrochloric acid(acid) and sodium hydroxide(base) react they form sodium chloride(salt) and water. Also, heat is evolved

Answer:

Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid & an alkali (base) to form salt 2 water as the products. Activity: To show how neutralisation of hydrochloric acid takes place.

  • Materials required: Dilute sodium hydroxide solution, dilute hydrochloric acid, phenolphthalein solution, beaker & a dropper

  • Method: Pour about 30ml of sodium Hydroxide solution in the beaker. In order to check the nature of this solution, add phenolphthalein solution to it. The solution turns deep pink in colour & it confirms the basic nature of solution.

  • Fill the dropper with dilute hydrochloric acid. Pour the acid in the beaker drop by drop with constant stirring. At some stage, we will notice that by the addition of one drop of acid the solution suddenly become colourless. It is because at this stage the sodium hydroxide solution has completely reached with hydro chloric acid to form salt & water. Thus the neutralisation reaction has taken place. If we will touch the breaker, it will be warm. It indicates that heat is involved during neutralisation reaction.

HCL NaOH → NaCl + H₂O + heat
