Neutralization

Neutralization is the process that occurs when an acid and a base come in contact with each other to make a salt and water. Take, for example, the reaction between baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (acetic acid) from the classic volcano experiments in elementary school. The bicarbonate anion accepts a proton from acetic acid, resulting in sodium acetate and carbonic acid (H2CO3). Carbonic acid is unstable and breaks down quickly to form water and carbon dioxide. Thus, by producing a salt (sodium acetate) and water, this reaction is a neutralization. Although the reaction of sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid is endothermic (the reaction mixture becomes cold to the touch), many neutralizations are exothermic processes.
