Example :

• When the surface of skin is receiving a pain trigger: heat, breach by object, cold, pressure.

• When a sensor receives input that causes the organism to 'be aware': Light in the retina, sound/vibration to a hearing organ etc.

Living things :

Living things respond to changes in light, heat, sound, and chemical and mechanical contact.
