A tiger in the zoo
'A tiger in the zoo' is a thought provoking poem by the Welsh poet Leslie Norris.
Through this poem the poet tries to express the agony of a caged animal which is used to a life in the wild.
The Tiger is a royal animal. It is the king of the jungle.
In the deep forests it lurks behind the long blades of grass to stealthily catch its prey especially the deer.
Its roar terrorises the entire jungle. But at the zoo it loses its power and dignity.
It is cruelly caged and heavily guarded. As a result it cannot express its royal rage with its loud roaring and fiery eyes. The poet juxtaposes the hunting habits of the tiger as it waits silently for its prey crouched on its soft padded paws that make no sound with its rage at being caged.
In side the cage the tiger has to have a quiet rage lest he be shot or whipped by the zoo authorities.
