When you upload something, lets use a photo in this situation, you would add it to a web page on the internet.
When you are adding new pictures in social media, you are uploading a photo file (JPEG/PNG etc) to a server on the internet.
Download is the exact opposite. You see a beautiful picture on Facebook and want to save it on your computer to look at anytime you want? You click download, this takes the file from the internet and copy’s it to your hard drive or physical storage device.
So in short
UPLOAD - files stored on your physical electronic device that you add to an internet server. Some uploads are private and some are public.
iCloud, Google Photos, Microsoft Word are all private file types in which you can upload them to the internet so you gain the ability to access them anywhere besides just the device you have the file saved on. Smart Phones always use flash storage and sd cards, Flash Drives also are flash.
