Vernalization is the induction of a plant's flowering process by exposure to the prolonged cold of winter, or by an artificial equivalent. After vernalization, plants have acquired the ability to flower, but they may require additional seasonal cues or weeks of growth before they will flower.

Definition:

Vernalisation is the process of inducing flowering in plants through a treatment of cold temperature (3-15°C). For example, Biennial plants like carrots and cabbage, require cold temperatures to flower. Winter varieties of wheat, rye, and radish also fail to flower as they are planted in autumn and therefore, need to be treated with low temperatures.

Significance:

  • The vegetative phase is shortened while the reproductive phase is reached quickly.
  • The plant becomes immune to many diseases and pathogens which leads to a better yield of flowers, fruits.
  • It also provides the plant with sufficient time to mature as advanced reproductive developments are prevented at an early stage.
