What does A 1 denotes in MS Excel ?​

Now that you mention it, I find a bit irony to say that dollar sign helps to keep a value fixed in Excel.  

For instance (see screenshot below), if you input "=A1" in cell B1, and drag it downward.

The values in whole column B will automatically equal those in column A.

 

If you add the dollar sign, and repeat the move above, you will have the whole column B equal the value you fixed, in this case: A1.

Tips:

1. $ can be added separately to columns or rows. (e.g., $A1, A$1)

2. shortcut to add $: F4
