A map is a symbolic representation of selected characteristics of a place, usually drawn on a flat surface. Maps present information about the world in a simple, visual way. They teach about the world by showing sizes and shapes of countries, locations of features, and distances between places.

Maps represent relationships between things. Mostly these are spatial relationships, but mind maps show relationships between ideas, and things like the map of the human genome which shows the ordering of our genes.

Mariners use charts which are just maps that show sea instead of land. Geologists produce geological maps to represent what’s under the ground.
