By the pretzels were considered a sign of good luck and spritiual wholeness- possible due to the three holes in the common pretzels shape touted to represent the holy Trinity at this point.

Answer:

During 610 in Italy it is said that a monk created pretzels. Dough strips were cut and a shape of a child with arms folder in prayer shape was made and this was baked. So children who could memorize prayers effectively were given these small treats by the monk. However no official documentation from this era is there to confirm this fact.
