It means when we ourselves work hard to earn then that happiness is incomparable.And we get to know the value of money.

Abraham Lincoln wanted to convey the message that whatever we earn through hardwork even if it is a dollar then it surely more valuable than the money we earn without hardwork.
That is he wanted his son to learn that the hard earned money will help him to focus on 'how he earns the money' and not 'how much he earns'.
