Dickens paints the picture of Scrooge seeing himself as a young boy engrossed in fantasy books about Ali Baba, a princess and all sorts of other imaginary characters. He sees himself going into the fantasy world created by the authors of his favorite books where the characters actually seem to come to life.
Dickens does not tell us what books they are. But, as a boy, he really enjoyed the escape into a world of imagination.
