Answer:

One exercise I use in my workshops is, "Baa Baa, Black Sheep". which, I think, would suit Artaud's desire to "invent" a language that avoids the text's "tyranny over meaning" and lies halfway between thought and gesture. Two or three actors are asked to step into the "staging area", which may be the centre of a circle of participants or an open area in front of participants seated theatre-style. They are then given an improv situation. Examples are: 1. Friends in a restaurant are trying to order what they want but the waiter keeps bringing the wrong item 2. A girl hears that her BFF kissed her boyfriend and confronts her about it 3. A girl tries to break up a couple by openly flirting with the guy (at college / snack joint) But the only words they are allowed to use are, "Baa Baa, Black Sheep". All the words MUST be used together (No saying, "Baa" as an alternative to, "Hi" for example). I have been amazed at what rank amateurs can do with voice and gesture when challenged! One female actually evoked a Joey (of the serial, "Friends") rendition of, "How you doin'?", using just, "Baa Baa, Black Sheep" and body language. The "audience" burst out in spontaneous applause at that! Hope this helps.
