The ball in the poem 'The Ball Poem' is a metaphor for the possessions of the human beings. The ball represents our world of possessions, in which the things we lose cannot be replaced by the other, and we have to learn not to crib over it for long. It will only harm us mentally and physically. The ball which went rolling through the harbour straight to water cannot be brought back, and the child has to overcome his grief of losing the memories of his childhood
