Bassanio asked Antonio for 3000 pounds to buy a expensive gift for his love . Antonio did not have that much money as his ships were in the sea and not yet returned. So he borrowed money from a cunning Jewish money lender named Shylock. He also signed the bond that if he couldn't repay the dept within three months Shylock would cut a pound of flesh from Antonio's body near the heart in chest

Bassanio asked Antonio if he could borrow 3000 ducats to woo Portia for her hand in marriage, so that he will be able to use her fortune to repay the 'great depts' which 'hath left me gaged' (Act 1 Scene 1)

Antonio says that because "his fortunes are at sea", he does not have the "ready sum". But is however, willing to use his 'credit' to borrow money for Bassanio.
