One of the most recent census in India was conducted in the year 2001. As per the 2001 Census, there are Total 5,97,464 inhabited villages in India. Out of which, 5,71,168 villages have been electrified as on 30th April, 2014. All Union Territories have 100 per cent villages electrified, excluding Andaman and Nicobar Islands (77.8% electrified). A few major states such as Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have 100 per cent villages electrified. Ten States Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Rajasthan and A & N Island are below the National average (95.6%) in April, 2014. We might expect better results in the census that is going to be conducted in the following years.
