A clause can be independent that is it can convey the thought and also clause can be a dependent clause that is it supports the thought conveyed.

Even though her father guided her, she failed in mathematics two times.
Here the first part of sentence " even though her father guided her" doesn't convey the complete thing but it rather supports the clause "she failed in mathematics two times"
Therefore "even though her father guided her" is dependent clause and "she failed in mathematics two times" is independent clause.
