This means that he, the ancient mariner, has to spend his life in repentance and guilt. He undergoes extreme sorrow and dissatisfaction and the only way to relieve himself is by telling the entire story to someone.
Because of the constant emotional pain and sorrow he has to go through in life, it is called life-in-death.
