Demerits of defection:

1. Opportunistic and unethical practices came into role as the elected members would often abandon a party if offered money or in other words bribe.
2. It creates a division in politics which is bad because the main aim of politicians should be to serve the country and it has also lead to uncertainties which is not a quality of a stable government as governments can be made and unmade overnight due to defection.
