What does doctrine of lapse means..

hrish: the doctrine of lapse policy was proposed by Dalhousie the the-then general of india from 1846-1856. This created a sense of alarm among the ruling chiefs. The doctrine meant that when a ruler of a dependent state died without a natural heir, ghe state passed back to the english company. The prominent states to fall victim to the doctrine were Satara, Jhansi and Nagpur.

The doctrine of lapse was an annexation policy purportedly devised by Lord Dalhousie, who was the Governor General for the East India Company in India between 1848 and 1856
