What does douglas mean when he said THE INSTRUCTOR WAS FINISHED BUT I WAS NOT

Answer: All the activities/exercises as instructed by the instructor was completed and perfected by Douglas. But he wasnt sure if his fear of water will rise if he was alone in the pool.

Here author means that swimmer instructor has finished his training instruction but Douglas was not very confident on his training instruction and he still had a fear of drowning in water.

So, Douglas felt that his training needed to be test and he wanted to test his ability by himself. He went to Lake Wentworth for swimming and he overcome his fear.  Fear of drowning came when he was saved from drowning in water so he hired a trainer to learn swimming.
