Elsa, at the end of the story cried like an old woman because she felt she lost everything, was defeated, weakened and powerless to go back and change things.
Elsa was defeated in the sense that the man from repair wagon had manipulated her. Then she read into it erroneously, considering that he related to her and took an interest in what was important to her, flirtatiously, when eventually, all he wanted was a sale.
In a sense it confirmed that her husband is not the only man she has trouble understanding, but the differences between men and women are universal.
