The Electronic voting machine [EVM] were introduced in India in a phased manner between 1998 to 2000. According to election commission of India it was first used in the general election of Kerala in May 1982. EVM was developed by BEL and Electronics Corporation of India.

Advantages of EVM's:

- Saves around 10,000 tons of ballot paper. It is almost saving two lac trees approximately. So it can be said that is more sustainable choice than usage of ballot box system.

- Cost of maintenance, storage, man power is comparitively less in EVM'S.

- Faster counting and results.

- Reduces the possibilities of fake voting and rigging in the election booths.
