ANSWER:

The poet links fire and ice as the two "powerful elements of nature" to "human emotions" and human behavior. 'Fire' is the symbolism of human passions and unbridled desires. Uncontrolled fire and untamed desires will bring the world to an end.

On the other side, 'ice' represents 'hate'. It stands for "cold" reasoning. "Hatred" can make our mind numb and insensitive to feelings. Cold thoughts and reasoning can make us cruel.

There are people who believe that the cause of the end of the world would be 'fire'; the world would be reduced into a fireball. There are other people who believe that the cause would be 'ice'; pausing(freezing) all kinds of life to death and destruction.
