As a child, Mandela considered running around in the fields near his hut, swimming in the clear streams as freedom. He thought freedom was being able to roast mealies and ride the bare backs of bulls. All he had to do was obey his father and the customs of the tribe. It was only later that he yearned for the freedom that all human beings deserve: to be a masters of one's own self, actions and words, to get rights equal to all other men and have the liberty to express oneself.
