Answer:

Dronacharya was one of the best teachers that were present at the times of Mahabharata. He was brother in law of Kripacharya, the teacher of the Kauravas and Pandavas.

Dronacharya had made a name for himself in the art of archery and very few people like Bhishma and Lord Parsuram could defeat him.

Now archery was always taken as a more difficult and superior form of warfare than the swordmanship. Reason being it was more difficult to master as well as it was a long distance warfare. It required high level of concentration, vision and muscle strength.

Dronacharya wanted to test his students on these three aspects. He wanted to check how motivated and concentrated his students were. Yudhishthir almost got the correct answer coz he saw the bird. Only Arjun was able to concentrate and was clear enough in his head that he saw only the eye of the bird(maybe if Karna was present he would have answered same thing).

Later in Mahabharata a test and demonstration was organised for all form of warfare including swordmanship and spear throwing to demonstrate to the king Dhitrashtra how competent the Kauravas and Pandavas were in their fields.
