During a change in phase the particles of the substance are rearranged. A solid is a highly ordered state in which the particles are close together in an orderly arrangement called a crystal lattice. The particles can only vibrate around a point within the lattice structure. To form a liquid the particles will spread apart slightly but more importantly the particles can move away from their lattice positions and can move about within the confines of the liquid. To form a gas the particles can break away from the confines of the liquid and subsequently move very far apart relative to their tiny size.
