History can tell us what people did, who they were, when they lived and died and why they did what they did. Studying the past helps us build up a picture of what life was like, not just hundreds of years ago, but sometimes thousands of years ago. Everything around us has a history and a past. History is not just in museums it is in books, photographs, buildings and in the songs and stories passed down from one generation to the next. Some societies have written histories with writings and drawings going back thousands of years. Other societies tell their histories orally, by stories and songs that are passed on for hundreds of years.
