HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus which is a lentivirus that causes HIV infection and leads to development of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) over time.

Two most common mediums of its transmission are unprotected sex with an HIV infected person, and sharing injection with an HIV infected person.

That is why you are always advised to make sure that the person giving you an injection is not using a used needle, and you should never have unprotected sex with a person who you are not sure of having an infection.
