tadpoles have adrenal gland which requires iodine for its proper functioning and help in metamorphosis.

Tadpoles need iodine (the thyroid uses it to produce hormones) and in 'clean' water there is insufficient for them to produce the hormones necessary to change from the tadpole stage to the frog stage.
