Jyotirao Phule was an important social reformer of Maharashtra. He occupies an important position among social reformers as he took practical steps for the reformation of society.
He was the champion of woman emancipation. He fought for widow remarriage, girls education and against the child marriage. He along with her wife Savitribai Phule opened the first girls school in Bhide's Wada, Pune in 1848. He along with his wife, also started first ever orphanage home and gave protection to pregnant women.
