Here 'she' refers to Olga, Sergei's cook. Lushkoff means that whenever he used to go over at Sergei's place to chop wood she used to start saying things like, "Oh you sot!, Oh! you miserable creature, There's nothing for you but ruin" and so on. After that she used to sit opposite to him and start weeping for him saying, " Oh you drunkard! , You will burn in hell" and then she used to take the axe and start chopping the trees for Lushkoff. The qualities of Lushkoff revealed here are his honesty and his guilt when he saw her chopping wood for him. She was th reason he stopped drinking.
