Mandela says that he was born free because -

He was born in South Africa a country where blacks (Africans who are black in colour) were discriminated. But, he was against this discrimination that's why he and others fought for equality and they got justice.

In this time period South Africa was banned to play cricket.

That is why Mandela says he was born free.

he means that when he was born he was having his freedom under his parents guidance.. but when he grew up and saw and faced the world he understood real meaning of life..when he was small he was never forced to do something or face obligation ...after he grew he not only had hunger for his freedom but for his whole country
