Answer:
As Maria says, she is very proud of her Russian nationality.
Not only she is a Russian national but she is ethnically Russian also.
If we dive in to small details, Russia is a puzzle that consists of 140 nations. There are different languages, religions , ethnicities (lots of ethnicities , not only blond and blue eye which are minority) and all of them are called Россиянин , which in translation means Russian. But it does not mean or is not referred to the ethnicity . The translation of Русский and Россиянин have the same translation in English as a translation > Russian. Yet in Russia it has two diffrent translations refered to being a Russia and Ethnicity being a Russia. The absence of this translation is causing a lot of misunderstanding outside Russia.
it is not the same thing when a foreigner arrives to US and after 10 years gets an American passport and says I’m American. In Russia you see very dark person, with Chinese eyes and does not speak well in Russian, and when you ask them where are you from or who are you, they will say Russian, it does not mean they arrived to Russia and got a passport unlike in US. They are actually Russian and you can trace there family 300 to 400 years back , but they are not ethnically Russian. Which does not mean that person is originally not Russian. It is a complex because Russia is the biggest country on the planet , similar to the entire size of the moon with borders from East to west and 11 time zones. You can fit 100+ countries inside Russia. So don’t expect to compare to smaller lands.
so Maria Sharapova not only is Russian National but she is Ethnically Russian … yet we live in a free world and she is a free bird and achieved a lot world wide and now with honor retired form tennis. Well done Maria … nice start and nice finish .. perfect example when one is an idle outside politics
