what does n represent in the formula 2n^2 ? (while calculating the number of electrons in each shell.)

Please reply fast. This is coming in my exam !​

2n^2 is the formula for electronic configuration .

"n is the number of shells"

number of electrons in k shell is 2(1)^2=2

number of electrons in L shell is 2(2)^2=8

number of electrons in m shell is 2(3)^2=18

number of electrons in n shell is 2(4)^2=32

So it goes on like this..
