The National Student Financial Aid Scheme  (NSFAS) is a  government based student bursary  and loan scheme which  receives its funding  budget from the Department  of Higher Education and Training.

This Financial Aid Scheme was established on the basis of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme Act  56 of 1999.

It provides Financial Aid to students in form of  bursaries and loans in various public universities and  Technical and Vocational Education and  Training (TVET) Colleges in South Africa.

The Financial Aid provided by NSFAS  includes tuition fees,

food, accommodation, books and travel allowances.

The loans borrowed are  paid back to NSFAS once the student has graduated or left university or college and is employed with a minimum salary of  R30 000 or more per annum. In case the student is still  studying or unemployed, then they are not required to make the repayments.
