'snake easing his shoulders' means the relaxed movement of the snake's front body slithering into the crevice from where it had come to drink the water. It was not in hurry at all while moving into its hole until the poet threw a log behind it. After it felt threatened, it just hurriedly convulsed into the hole for saving its life.
