what does stable atom mean
Answers
Answer: An stable atom means that in their behaviour they are reluctant in bond formation
An atom can be stable by forming a bond with another or by being inert i.e. they have complete outer shell ( all 8 electrons are present )
There are some atoms which do not have any bonds and their atomic orbitals are also incomplete still they tend to be more stable then other elements since they have such arrangement of electrons that make them more stable
Stability may also mean independent state . Not each and every element has an atom as independent species but have a molecule instead . But few elements have an atom as their independent species
Stability may also be defined as the ability of any atom of retaining the elementary particles present in it . Some atoms show radioactivity . YOU may observe that when you keep 100 g of uranium for two days you will find that the mass of uranium is reduced
Hence in chemistry there are many meanings of stability of an atom . I tried to cover most of i knew about .

A stable Atom means those atoms who have achieved their inert gas electron configuration .
This means that they have fufilled their outermost shell by gaining or losing one or more electrons.
That process makes an atom stable.
The following process by which an atom becomes stable are -
- By gaining one or more electron
- By losing one or more electron
- By sharing one or more electrons ie, they form Covalent Bond.
Note:-
All Inert gases are stable because they have fullfil the electronic Configuration ie, in their outermost shell they have 8 compleate electrons . All atoms have to compleate their "Octate" for becoming stable.
Inert gases are also known as Noble gases.
The Noble Gases are -
- Helium
- Neon
- Argon
- Krypton
- Xenon
- Radon
Nole gases are Non-reactive in Nature Because As we know to take part in a chemical reaction there must be some free electrons that will do the reaction . As they are stable that means they have no free electrons . so they are Non reactive in Nature.
