A subsistence crisis is a crisis caused by economic factors (generally high food prices). The population of France rose considerably from 1715 to 1789 which led to rapid increase in the demand for food. Also, the production of grains could keep up with the high demand so, the prices increased while salaries of the workers did not. Lastly, King Louis XVI increased taxes to cover the political and state expenses which angered the citizens.
