Ethernet only use 4 of the 8 cables in the connector (actually it uses pins 1, 2, 3 and 6), so it was possible (and sometimes people did this) to run two Ethernet connections over the same cable, by using a nonstandard Y-shaped connector. More common was to run phone wires to pin 4 and 5, so that you could plug either an analog phone or an Ethernet cable into the wall, and either would work.
