An Elementary School Classroom In A Slum

The poet, Stephen Spender, represented a mirror reflection of slum children in his poem.

The slum children, reading in an elementary school, are exhausted, hungry, malnourished and skinny. The poet compared them to the weeds which conveys that these children are unwanted in the society. Their classroom had maps of world, Shakespeare's portrait and many more things which didn't offer any hope to them.

In such condition of slum children, the poet wants quality education for these children. The poet asserted that the high class people in the society and the concerned authority must step forward for these children. If they would be provided quality education and better opportunities then no one could stop them to shine like stars.

The poet in his whole poem, specified the ways for the slum children.
