When the sergeant brings the convict to the bishop's house, believing the convict had stolen the candlesticks, the Bishop tells the sergeant that he had gifted the candlesticks to the convict. The sergeant then says that the convict refuses to show his passport or identity papers. The bishop tells the sergeant that the convict is his friend and so he shouldn't need the papers.
