 Mosses grow in wet or moist or shady habitats because mosses don't have roots, they can't transport water like other plants. This makes them very vulnerable to drying and therefore mosses grow in wet or moist habitats.

 Lichens, on the other hand, can survive in a variety of habitats, from tropical rain forests to deserts to the frozen tundra of Antarctica. In the absence of water, lichens will simply go dormant, turning dry and brittle, until water becomes available again.

 Mosses and lichens are mostly found in Tundra vegetation where the temperature does not go above 100 C even in summers.

 Both are epiphytes as they grow on other plants or rocks. Lichens breakdown rocks into soil and mosses grow on them.
