A light-year is a unit of distance. It is the distance that light can travel in one year. Light moves at a velocity of about 300,000 kilometers (km) each second. So in one year, it can travel about 10 trillion km. More p recisely, one light-year is equal to 9,500,000,000,000 kilometers. Thus basically we can define the astronomical unit to measure distance called light year.

Light Year conveys us the distance and age of a distant star in the space.

Imagine the way of calculating the distance of a star and write it in Kilometers and miles. You barely have to write up to twenty digits. Light year had made this action simple. One can easily calculate the distance of a star by calculating the light that has traveled from the star to us.

Imagine that a star is one million light years away from us. Here the light from that star must have to cross unimaginable distance to reach us.

With the light year calculation we can also able to calculate the age of a star.

Here I have presented the way of calculation.

Speed of Light= 186,000 miles/second

Multiply the speed of light that travels per second with 60 (60 seconds in a minute) then multiply the result with another 60 (60 minutes in an hour) and then with 24 (24 hours in a day). Then multiply the resultant with 365 (365 day in a year)

Now you will get the sequence of digits that convey the distance that traveled by the light in a year.
