the passage highlights an incident in which some people travelling in a ship face an unknown and dreadful creature which more seems to be or is described as a furious and dangerous animal. The crew members of the ship are unable to fight with it or even protect themselves because of no light; the darkness at night is so intense that they can't even see properly. but around midnight the moster disappears and at exactly 12:53 it reappears! this makes it sound horror as well as mystery. also it keeps following them along the way. it once also seemed to be a whale or like creature. the next day when there's light they do all the preparations for a fight against that creature.
