the poem cold within  signify the lack of warmth and compassion among people the people around are so selfish that the end their selfishness perish them only like those 6 people who were trapped in the bitter cold the rich person didnt gave his stick cause he didn,t want to waste it helping a poor the poor didn't want to share his stick with the worthless rich the whites didn,t share case their was a black n the other did'nt share cause one person over there didn't belong to his religion and the last person died out of selfishness thus the poem states "they died not for cold outside they died for the cold within" thus their envy ,hatred  killed them only ..
