The poem “ Night of the scorpion “ is written by the Indian-Jewish poet Nissim Ezekiel. It depicts the selfless love of a mother who is stung by a scorpion. It also portrays the solidarity and concern of the villagers who make efforts to bring comfort to the mother in her painful moments. The poem is written in
a free verse without any rhyme scheme or meter. There are many figures of speech Such as alliteration ,simile ,antiithesis, personification, repetition and onomatopoeia. For example: ‘The peasants came like swarms of flies’.Here there is a direct comparison between the peasants and swarms of flies with the use of the word ‘like’. It is a narrative poem. which contains a lot of imagery which gave us a vivid picture of the events happening all throughout the poem. In the end the poet highlights the selfless love of a mother who even in her agony and pain thanks god for sparing her children from being stung by the scorpion . I like this poem because it clearly depicts the essence village life, the interaction between people and their solidarity and also the sensitive ending.
