'When the humid shadows hover all the starry spheres' refers to the dark moisture-laden clouds that float in the sky eclipsing the stars and planets.

EXPLANATION:

In the poem ‘Rain on the Roof’ by Coates Kinney, the poet writes from the point-of-view of a persona who has snuggled into bed and hears the pitter-patter of the rain on the roof. The falling rain brings back many memories of his life especially his dead mother and siblings. To create the grave and serious atmosphere that engulfs the poem, the poet uses the phrase ‘humid shadows’.

This phrase has a metaphorical connotation to tear drops as the poet juxtaposes the outer weather condition to his mental state. Starry spheres can also be interpreted as the eyes, which like the moisture laden clouds are filled with tears.
