At first primary education aimed to give children a solid ground on reading, writing, and arithmetic, along with history and geography.
Boys were taught military drill and girls sewing.
Reading and writing included the study of grammar, spelling, dictation and composition. There was also an approach to singing, drawing, and science which were introduced in the 19th century.
The Education Act in 1877 provided for secular education to exclude the religious observances from the teaching. But after much debate half an hour of religious teaching was allowed per week, but they were after the school ours so that children whose parents didn't agree should not attend it.
New subjects like nature study through observations were also added. Civics and moral training had been taught formally since 1904, but during and after the World War there was greater emphasis on preparing students to become patriotic citizens. There was also stress on preparing children for what was seen as appropriate gender roles. In 1929 curriculum specified woodwork for boys and home craft for girls. It was not until the 1970s that boys and girls were allowed to take cooking, sewing, woodwork and metalwork.
